Protecting the Planet — with Henry Kravis of Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co. Pioneering it All

When Henry Kravis and his partner George Roberts launched Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co (KKR) in the mid 70’s with the help of the First Chicago Corporation, their specialty was in bootstrap buyouts. Moving on, hoping to make the companies they purchase greener and more profitable to boot, KKR have set up an extraordinary green project that has changed the method by which businesses and environmental activists work. Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co’s Henry Kravis and the New York based Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) merged a year ago, with the intention of making green business practices a mainstream idea. Their goals include encouraging their affiliated firms to oppose environmental threats e.g. toxic emissions and extreme water consumption. Eco-efficiency (a phrase initially advocated by the WBCSD) is the method applied to achieve these aims, employing policies like recycling programs, reducing the dispersion of toxic chemicals and maximum use of renewable resources. Even though the program was a huge success, people simply did not recognize how extensive the results truly were until Ken Mehlman, the executive in charge of the project, looked at the profits for the first year. Much to everyone’s surprise, Ken discovered that practicing eco-efficiency not only increased environmental awareness, but also increased the the profit from every business too. Up to now, Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co and Ken Mehlman have well-nigh all of their companies involved in the project. Still, when you consider that the group has a 2009 portfolio worth $86,000,000,000, you may be sure that this wasn’t a simple accomplishment. These two groups along with Ken Mehlman are expanding the Green Portfolio project. The Climate Corps Program administrated by the Environmental Defense Fund is an example of this, it campaigns for planet friendly principles to students taking an MBA.

KKR and Ken Mehlman have made the effort to formulate a series of products which manage various resources. These metrics let employees see how green they are and discover any practices that might need to improve. Henry Kravis, the KKR, and the Environmental Defense Fund are genuine pioneers in the business world. Their innovations have simplified the procedure for business organizations in every industry and illustrated that running a profitable business need not entail the hefty price of negatively impacting our planet.
